Movie restarting when orientation changes

Description
Star watching a movie in portrait orientation and after a few seconds change to landscape. The movie starts from the beginning. We must save the state before the activity gets recreated.

the entire movie is restarted when playing with avi files.
that this does not occur with m4v, mp4 and mkv files (granted, after a longer-than-expected delay).
dumb speculation would led me to believe that this may be related to not knowing the position of the playhead in avi files (the duration shows zero)?
however, i was under the impression that we had what looked like a somewhat viable solution for the duration issue in avi files?
do we not have a solution for the zero duration?
is this not related to that?

In general movies continue when changing orientation but here is a scenario when this is not true.
1. Start a movie
2. Change orientation
3. while the movie is still loading, change orientation again.
Effect:
Movie will start from the beginning.
Maybe this is another reason to use a service.

Took simple approach without Service for now.
