how to get apps to be able to play audio on the HDA system

one user wanted to use his system as a jukebox.
after some research, it looks like subsonic was a good choice among slim pickings.
however, it could not play audio through the system. here is what was needed to get it working:
usermod -a -G audio apache systemctl restart httpd
it may also need this:
systemctl restart subsonic
though i do not think its needed. the player may
