Description

Scanner Server is... a scanner server. It's a web-based utility that can initiate a scan and save it as a JPG, TIF, PNG or even a TXT using OCR .

According to the readme, the necessary additional packages are...

The following packages need to be installed:
* netpbm - for image conversion
* sane-utils            - for accessing scanners
* tesseract-ocr - for image to text conversion
  tesseract-ocr-eng - english languague file for tesseract
* apache2               - a web server

In addition to the obvious requirement of Apache. Beyond that it's just a couple of files dropped in a directory under Apache's web root and making sure the www-data (or equivalent) is a member of the "scanner" and "lp" groups (or at least those are the necessary groups on Ubuntu Jaunty).

I've found this tool very useful with my home server and I hope Amahi can make use of it, too!

I've got a package for this in alpha. The big hangup is permissions on the scanner in Redhat - they don't have the udev rules set up automatically.
